I have actually worried that this interview - and how I assembled it - caused (or exacerbated already-existing) friction, and wondered what else might have happened behind the scenes around the time that this show was cancelled. My antenna tingled and I even wondered if I owed David an apology (or if he'd even read the thing). But with a vague aura of "trouble" around all this, I actually stepped away from the band, stopped following their output. Ceased to be fun - the Montana Missile Silo album was the last one of theirs I heard - but also one of my favourites of their later period. I wonder what Steve is up to these days?Allan MacInnishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05394301776870727673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8762075.post-35664562918048681152021-08-23T04:50:08.010-07:002021-08-23T04:50:08.010-07:00Well, after the interview Steven didn't work o...Well, after the interview Steven didn't work on the next Pere Ubu album. He once mailed that he wasn't interested in what David had recorded on his own in the time he was recovering from the thing het was recovering from. So, what has happened inbetween? Was his influence becoming too big; as we know Pere Ubu is not a democracy. People can drop out and there is the policy 'once Ubu, always Ubu' but you can't quit and claim your former position in the band. I read that Scott Kraus did not quite understand that in its essence and I read some complaints by him when he believed that his songideas didn't get the acclaim of David he'd expected. Is the case of Steven a case of déja vu? Not as seen through the eyes of the former Professor of Walkology (whose musical output is one of the great lucks in my life)....<br /> Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17973208827036201351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8762075.post-28599472315174500802017-11-30T17:20:22.354-08:002017-11-30T17:20:22.354-08:00Thank you! But btw - note my subsequent piece on this very blog re: David Thomas (above this one) - he is in hospital and the west coast dates have been cancelled, all of which happened VERY suddenly, I gather, so there's still some chaos afoot. I'm really bummed not to be seeing them tonight, as I'm sure are his bandmates, not to be playing, and I imagine EVERYONE is worried for him! ...While everyone is unique in their own way, some are more unique than others, and David Thomas is on the level of Beefheart or Zappa or such in terms of his singular idiosyncratic talent and contribution... really really hope he recovers fully and quickly!
