As it happens, Lives of Others was number one in both, so there wasn't much mathematical calculations necessary." Now we both know.

I'll add your blog to the links on the right presently -- I gotta go catch the repeat screening of Manufactured Landscapes.

Didn't catch In the Line of Beauty. -

A.Allan MacInnishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05394301776870727673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8762075.post-1160957166532867902006-10-15T17:06:00.000-07:002006-10-15T17:06:00.000-07:00Interesting analysis; it hadn’t occurred to me to ...Interesting analysis; it hadn’t occurred to me to look at the film that way. On reflection, I don’t find it at all dishonest or even problematic that the Stasi character turns out sympathetic. My real problem with the film was that parts of it were incredibly dull (mostly when the playwright, Georg, was onscreen). I have an additional post about the film here.

About the audience choice awards: do you have any idea how they are tabulated? The ballots were often advertised as “vote for your favourite films” but it’s really a rating (from one to five stars), not a vote. You can’t say that The Lives of Others got the most votes; it’s just unclear whether they decided to take an average of the ratings for each film, or what? Did they just count ratings of five stars and ignore the rest? I’d really like to know.

I’m working on a post about my favourites of what I saw at VIFF; it turns out that they are all English-language films. A little sad.

Did you see The Line of Beauty? I never got a chance but I was interested in it because I’ve read a different novel by Hollinghurst which was good. It’s getting an encore tonight at VIFC. On Monday, Uganda Rising, which I heard was good, is getting an encore at the Ridge at 7pm. It’s some kind of fundraiser.Mathew Englanderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17063285871704653303noreply@blogger.com
